Over the past month, the City of Munich has made significant progress in its ASCEND initiatives, bringing tangible progress to the Harthof district across mobility, energy, citizen engagement, and public space interventions.
Expanding Clean Mobility: E-Car Sharing Station at Harthof
Munich’s new e-car sharing station in the Harthof district is now operational, featuring three electric vehicles: a microbus and two smaller electric cars already available for use by residents. To further support sustainable mobility, the city plans to install a solar-powered carport equipped with photovoltaic panels, which will provide covered parking for six vehicles and additional on-site renewable energy generation.
Building Energy Communities: New Spin-Off Launched
Munich is also advancing the development of a local energy community in Harthof. This initiative will build on the experience of an existing energy community in the city, creating a dedicated spin-off to foster local energy sharing and increased citizen participation in the district’s energy transition.
Citizen Engagement: Preparing for Co-Creation
In preparation for the citizen engagement phase starting in June, the ASCEND team in Munich recently held a dedicated communication workshop. This internal team session focused on how to best address questions from Harthof residents and how to structure the upcoming co-creation process. As part of this effort, Munich will launch the District Energy Council, which will include both in-person activities and online participation opportunities to ensure broad community involvement.
Street Experiments: New Public Space Activations
Munich continues to innovate in the use of public spaces. The well-known parklet from last year has been relocated within the district and will remain in place from June 6 until mid-October. Additionally, a new street intervention is being co-created with local citizens and partners, featuring a small PV-powered station where passersby can charge their smartphones directly from solar energy. This installation is planned to be in place from mid-July to mid-October, further enhancing the district’s sustainable urban environment.
Through these diverse actions, Munich continues to bring the ASCEND vision to life, transforming city districts with clean energy, shared mobility, and inclusive participation at the core.
