Harthof
in Munich spans across 56 hectares and is home to 6000 individuals. Primarily a residential area, it consists of 126 residential buildings, housing around 3,300 residential units and offering a total floor space of 206,000 square meters. The district includes amenities such as schools, kindergartens, and a few small businesses, while major industrial activities are absent.

The majority of housing units within Harthof are rental apartments owned by partner GWG. These units were constructed between the 1940s and 1970s and have low energy efficiency standards. Heating in the district primarily relies on oil and gas, with only a small-scale installation for renewable energy sources. Furthermore, there is currently no provision for shared clean mobility services within the district.
The project aims to transform Harthof into a clean, CO2-neutral positive energy district. The city's ambition is to scale this transformation to 100 structurally similar districts in Munich by 2035, covering more than 43% of the city and providing a large share of the population with a CO2-neutral, healthier environment.
City Alliance
It encompasses a small village (Kirchheim, population 10,000), the mid-size city of Augsburg (population less than 300,000 inhabitants) and the Munich Metropolitan Region, covering 33 counties and cities with 6,2M residents. Cooperation with the German National Smart Cities program is targeted as well.

Highlights in 2025
ASCEND Network-Event: Twice a year, everyone involved in the ASCEND project meets in Munich to give each other an update on the project's progress. This year, we were delighted to receive a spontaneous visit from Dr Christian Scharpf, Head of Labour and Economic Affairs for the City of Munich.

Shared mobility offers launched: A total of six charging points for electric cars were installed. Three are used by ASCEND partner Stattauto to offer car-sharing services. Two small cars and one van are available for hire. The remaining charging points can be used freely in the neighbourhood

Electric garbage truck in Harthof: Since February, waste disposal in Harthof has also become more environmentally friendly. An electric garbage truck is now in use at Harthof. It is intended to replace the biogas-powered vehicle in the medium term. With an output of 680 hp and a gross battery capacity of 381 KWh, it can cover a distance of up to 150 km in operation. That is sufficient for a full day's shift.

School project in Harthof: How can solar energy be used to generate power? Together with pupils, ASCEND and its partner Solar2030 e.V. organised project days at the secondary school in Harthof. The pupils visited large photovoltaic systems as well as small balcony PV systems. A PV module was also installed at the school. Tips on how to save energy were also on the agenda.
ASCEND’s parklet is back: This year the ASCEND parklet moved to a different location at the Harthof. Equipped with a bookshelf, seatings and a table to sit and take a rest / play a game, the parklet aims to show the citizens how many public space is used for two parking cars in the street. An opening event late June introduced the parklet to the neighbourhood. Also, we had thematic offers for children and our regular counselling-offers at the parklet.

Balcony-PV Installation workshop: In cooperation with Solar 2030 e.V., the ASCEND team organised a bulk order of balcony PV modules for tenants of Münchner Wohnen. In a joint workshop, participants were shown how to securely attach these modules to their balconies and how to operate the system safely and efficiently. The offer was aimed at tenants of Münchner Wohnen and will be repeated in 2026 for all those interested.

Ideas consultation at Harthof: As a first step towards the workshops on establishing a district council for Harthof, regular ideas consultations were held in the district. In addition to online participation, we were able to gather a wealth of feedback on site about how residents envisage an energy-positive district. We collected nearly 100 ideas. They will be discussed later during the co-creation process for the funding of a district council.

The ASCEND city terrace was set up in collaboration with local residents. It is a consumption-free place to pause, sit down and take a break. Plants provide shade and a pleasant atmosphere. It was also possible to charge mobile phones using solar energy. The city terrace is to be set up again next year.

Workshop series on the district council: In November, we started with two workshops on establishing the district council in Harthof. Ideas from the idea consultation hour are incorporated here and discussed further. The workshops serve as a co-creation process and will continue in the coming year with the aim of finding a group of committed citizens who will continue to engage with energy issues in the neighbourhood beyond the project period.

Sun4Ukraine delegation visits Harthof: In the sun4ukraine project, 14 European cities (which are part of the 100 climate neutral cities) are working together with 12 Ukrainian cities with the aim of enabling local authorities in Ukraine to make reconstruction sustainable. The state capital Munich, together with the city of Oslo, is a mentoring city in this programme. During the site visit, the ASCEND project team presented solutions that are currently being implemented in Munich.
